From refined wines and authentic regional beers to artisanal farmhouse ice cream, our region is known for its diverse and tasty local products. Be surprised by the culinary gems the Hoge Kempen has to offer and taste the unique flavours of our natural environment.

Beer

Brewery Kompel was founded in 2015 in Maasmechelen as a tribute to the miners who came from far away and, thanks to their hard work and mined coal, brought wealth to all Belgians. Today, Kompel is also the name of an excellent Belgian Craft Beer. Kompel beers have won awards on several occasions, including at the World Beer Awards during which several gold awards were won.
Available in the shop at our National Park Visitor Centre in Terhills.

Klein Kloosterke Brewery is a small-scale craft brewery with a warm link to the healthcare sector from Maaseik. Among other things, the brewery brews four craft beers: Köster, Zöster, Pestoeër and Missjënaris.

Bree-based Cornelissen Brewery is a craft brewery with regional beers such as Ops-Ale, Bosbier, Limburgse witte, Bokkereyer, and many more! With their range, they snatched several gold medals at international competitions.

At the Perron Bieren brewery in Gellik (Lanaken), you can find different types of beer such as the Saison, Blond, Tripel and Bruin. Perron tries to brew beers that are bursting with flavour, yet on average do not contain much more than 5% alcohol. He uses his hop garden as a source of inspiration.

Wine

Huize Timmermans is an artisan winery since 1978 from Dilsen-Stokkem. De Maaslander is a wine made mainly from Jonagold and grapes (Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner) and sometimes with a touch of wine from old apple varieties. In 2007, ‘De Maaslander’ was officially recognised as a traditional Flemish regional product by VLAM (Vlaams Centrum voor Agro- en Visserijmarketing). Labelled ‘Limburg apple wine with grapes’ by VLAM, the wine guarantees tradition, purity and quality. The wine is the only recognised still wine to date.

Huize Timmermans


Wijndomein Gellick is located in Lanaken. Since 2015, this domain has been home to no fewer than three Limburg wines. In 2018, it was possible to harvest for the first time and in 2019 the first wine could be bottled. The wines produced here bear the name ‘In den Burg’, inspired by the area on which the vineyard is located, which on the first maps of Belgium, was called In den Burg.

Located on the Old Meuse in the historic village centre of Dilsen, wine estate Thilesna comprises 4 ha of vines. It is a wine estate where Pinot Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling are grown with full abandon.

In the picturesque Maasland village of Aldeneik lies the 10-hectare vineyard Wijndomein Aldeneyck. On a sun-drenched south-eastern slope along the Meuse with mineral-rich gravel and gravel terroir excellent for wine grapes, they passionately grow the Pinot varietal, Chardonnay, Riesling and three sparkling wines. These wines have been awarded Best Belgian Wine several times.

Aldeneyck


Under the name Vineyard Vilain XIIII, Jean, René and Pol cultivate a vineyard of about 3 ha in Leut (Maasmechelen). With care, love and passion, they grow Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir and Acolon, among others, for still white wines, reds and sparkling wines.

Gin

Orshof Gin is Orshof reception point's own local product. It is made from quince, medlar and chestnut from its own orchard.

Gin and Flowers offers four delicious varieties of gin, lovingly and artisanally distilled from Dilsen-Stokkem. The 42% alcohol content gin is produced in one of Belgium's oldest breweries. You can choose between Lavender, Angelica Root, Roses and Maaskruiden.

Coffee


De Gulden Tas is a coffee brewery located in Bree. The story of the Gulden Tas began in 1948, when grandfather Creemers started an artisanal roastery to provide his surroundings with the freshest coffee possible. In 1995, the Gulden Tas was founded. Where once mostly classics passed over the counter, today they focus on exclusive and unique coffees.

Biscuits

Maison Maeseyck is a premium producer of the knapkoek, a traditional delicacy from Maaseik. The knapkoek is a round cake originating from the Belgian Meuse region and is one of the oldest delicacies in Flanders!

    Bakery Vangronsveld still bakes the traditional Limburg Mikkemannen in the centre of Bilzen. They are sweet rolls more or less in the shape of a man. Now they include pearl sugar, sultanas and a hint of cinnamon!

    Blueberries


    Blueberry Schrijnwerkers' blueberry plantation in Oudsbergen focuses entirely on growing blueberries and raspberries. At the foot of the Oudsberg you will find the 15-hectare plantation. Besides the berries themselves, they also have numerous blueberry-based processing products (juice, jam, syrup, dessert sauce, tea and alcoholic beverages).

    Asparagus

    At Oudsbergen-based Asperges Knoops, you can visit 7 out of 7 for day-fresh white and green asparagus during the asparagus season, from April to June (start and end date depending on the weather).

    Chocolate

    Come and discover artisanal chocolate products at Chocolaterie Bonaparte in Maaseik. With more than 60 different types of chocolate from various continents and with special - often local - raw materials, Bonaparte not only creates surprising recipes, but also very special specialities. Since 2011, they have been paying tribute to Limburg delicacies with the Limbupraline. This praline made of high-quality white chocolate was given a filling of artisanal apple syrup, aceto from Pecoraro and apple brandy.

    Farmhouse ice cream

    At the Tievishoeve in Oudsbergen, they process their fresh cow's milk into farmhouse ice cream. They have both artisanal ice cream cakes and ice cream desserts here. From progres ice cream cakes, to individual ice cream portions or friscoes!

    't Roren-ijsje is a Bree-based dairy farm where it started processing milk into ice cream in 1999. There are no fewer than 26 different types of ice cream, ice cream cakes, ice cream pastries, occasional ice cream cakes, ... An extensive range of artisanal farmhouse ice cream and sorbet.

    Meat products

    Butcher's shop Slootmaekers from Lanaken has been proud owners of the label Streekproduct Maaslandse Rauwe ham for several years. They are one of the few butchers who can still offer genuine artisanal products. Almost all products are made at their premises, from live cattle to finished product.

    At Slagerij Otten in Lanaken, they still offer beautiful traditional regional products. The Limburg liver sausage and Limburg blood sausage, for example, are real favourites.

    Honey

    Bijenzoet is a local, ecological and artisanal beekeeping business by two young twenty-somethings located in Uikhoven.
