You mainly walk through extensive forests in the southern foothills of the Kempen Plateau. You cross or walk along some crystal clear streams and sometimes you feel a small touch of Haspengouw. This stage connects three "Gates to the National Park": Kattevennen, Lieteberg (1 km from the trail) and Pietersheim, once a seigniory of the Princes of Mérode. An important part of this hike coincides with the legendary GR 5.
