Approach route from Genk Station to Kattevennen, the official starting point of the National Park Trail:
Do not expect a historic city centre, but a city development that started in the 1960s through the growth and prosperity of the Genk coal mines of Zwartberg, Winterslag and Waterschei. Thanks to the Molenvijver Park and the more natural Heempark, you leave this centre with its housing estates and shoppings surprisingly quickly. Next, via an old tram railway you reach one of the gates to the National Park: Kattevennen, official starting point of the National Park Trail. Via a futuristic looking lookout tower (Bliksem Trap), you have an overview of the entire Hoge Kempen National Park.
